Welcome to our Thursday night feature, ‘The Men Behind The Menswear’ (on Instagram anyway).
This evenings’ bloke in the hot-seat is Johan aka @johanmalik80. As always on the 10@10’s Johan is passionate about denim and loves to share his threads and fades via his IG feed. Threads and Fades? That’s good, new tag there I reckon #threadsandfades 😉
MEET THE MAN BEHIND THE MENSWEAR
NAME: Johan Malik aka @johanmalik80
LOCATION: Jakarta, Indonesia
OCCUPATION: Oil mining, consultants and owner
1. So Why Instagram?
My wife and a colleague of mine advised me to use Instagram so I could share my passion for denim and especially my Red Wing boots and Denim ‘iron hearts’ and ‘flat heads’. Since then I’ve been on Insta, making it a big part of my daily life.
2. Why Denim, Boots, Workwear, Ruggedness?
My interest for denim, boots and workwear started when I began my oil companies 2 years ago. Since 6-7 years ago I have been really interested in rugged style, but I didn’t have enough money to buy and now, clothes are a big part of my life and they represent who I really am.
3. What are your thoughts on the rise in popularity of “Instafashion” and the community it is creating?
It is a fun way to meet new people who also like the same stuff you’re into. I think through Insta I can see how people likes my photo and my style.
4. Top 3 brands to shop and why?
I think everyone can guess that the number one for me is Red Wing Boots. My whole shoe rack is almost 50% Red Wings haha. The only things not Red Wing are:
x1 Iron heart 555-02
x1 Filson briefcase 256
x1 Flat head 5002 jean
x1 Unbranded custom jean
x1 Wrangler vintage jean
x2 LVC vintage jean and chinos
x1 Mccoys leather jacket
My go-to brands are:
5. Where’s your favourite place to shop these brands?
– Levi’s mall plaza in Indonesia. They sell LVC and I really like to spend my money in their shop.
– Ebay, worldwide.
– Limbro denim mall in Ciputra, they have all the stuff I need.
6. When did you decide to voice and share your love for your clobber on social media?
I started out doing some details pics of my shoes and my clothing and all of a sudden I started to notice I was getting more and more likes. Then I started to pay attention to other “Instagrammers” and I started to get many ideas to combine my wear and my style. Some of the ideas worked better than others, but I think the stuff I do now works for me and my followers, because many brands local in my country Indonesia and Turkey endorse me for their products.
7. What’s the secret behind your great images; Who takes them? When are they taken? How do you capture the magic your followers enjoy so much?
As with so many things, when my Instagram page was new, to get many followers was so difficult. I learned to get more followers, I needed to try something different about my style and I found rugged style, denim and boots. It worked successfully! I use a simple self timer app and prop my phone up between a cup of coffee, my bag and my wallet. Sometimes I use rock and wood, this is a true story. My favorite spots are public places, I can see where a good angle for capture and I’m sure I look like a lunatic at that time because I’m doing this on my own. I usually operate on a daily routine based on my schedule at my site or after a meeting. My boot shots are taken in the morning prior to leaving the mess hall. My self timer shots are taken on my way into lunch. My gear like ‘watches’, ‘wallet’ and outfit drops are typically taken in the afternoon. I have to say, sometimes I feel tired, but I’m happy if I look at many people liking my pics and getting new followers. This is fun and also funny if I imagine what I’ve been doing while I picture myself without a friend to help. Sometimes friends also did not make a good result, so I prefer to do images on my own.
8. What feeds do you like to follow and check in on? Who should we check out?
Definitely check out the brands I’ve already mentioned above as they have great feeds showcasing their products. For style dudes I always love @bvo_66, @mooky_bc, @whaleysworld, @cuffington, @jjayhawks, @outlinedcloth, @ryancascarano, @drjekyll84 & @vorstenbos; they have great stuff and for sure are crushing the menswear game right now!
9. What tips would you give new starters on Instagram to help them get there feed off the ground and successful?
Be yourself, wear what you like, of course you like what definitely feels comfortable. Respect new followers, if they have a question respond well, do not ignore them. Be a humble person, then we will be rewarded by fellow Instagrammers and get new followers.
10. And Lucky Last, You’re going to be stranded on a desert island and you can take 1 outfit (4 items) Only with you.
What would they be? And Why?
I hope the island has a good view, probably better than heaven, haha! I will be wearing the Flat Head 5002 jean, Red Wing 875 Moc Toe, White Lady Co. t-shirt, and McCoys leather jacket j24L Buco. Also, I’ll bring Filson bags filled with cold beer in it. Of course, supported by the wifi so I can post what I do on the island and I’ll be tagging all my friends on IG for their viewing pleasure of heaven. I think they will be very jealous and angry with me. Haha
A Filson bag full of beer Johan? Sounds like my type of bag! Thank you very much for taking the time to share your views with us buddy, it’s a great read.
Moving onto next week…
Firstly next Monday, we have @kojimagenesxsf in ‘The Brands Behind…’ feature. Based in Kojima Kurashiki, Okayama, Japan (said to be the home of Japanese Denim) their founder Hidemitsu Kawazome has grown up surrounded by the holy thread. This feature is the perfect chance to get an insight into the mind of a true artist! You can see Hidemitsu’s recent interview with clutch magazine here it’s worth the perusal and leads onto next Monday’s feature perfectly!
Thursday we have Carey Otto aka @ottonomous1. Based around the same patch of terra firma as Paul (@bothrops1), Carey loves his denim, boots and flannels. Obviously he fits perfectly into the 10@10 mould and his time in the hot-seat makes for a great read!
Thanks for stopping by again folks, your time for this humble blog is greatly appreciated. Have a top weekend.
See y’all Monday!
