I’m sure a few of you know, my bro, Bert aka @bvo_66 has recently started to fade some Benzacs in and his eye for detailed shots are going to make the process very fun to follow indeed…although, Bert, WHERE THE HELL ARE YOU?

Anyways, today we are talking about another brother in @jasonvanpul (formally known as @djeezzzie which, Jason, was very confusing boss) 😉 So it’s time to sit back, relax, crack open a beer and enjoy the the thoughts of Jason as @jasonvanpul answers the @clobbercalm 10@10.

NAME: Jason van Pul aka @jasonvanpul
AGE: 34
LOCATION: Middelburg, The Netherlands
OCCUPATION: Marketing guy

1. So Why Instagram?

Unlike any other platform I know Instagram has the ability to sustain online communities in a way that is both informative and entertaining. Whether you like flower arrangements, love cats or are a succer for raw denim. I’m always looking for ways to share my passion for denim and Instagram has proved to be a great outlet for this.

I can honestly say I’ve made some friends along the way. And I’ve gotten some great opportunities through Instagram as well. I’ve been asked to represent P&Co (@pandco) during the Amsterdam Denim Days last May and I’ve started to write for Dutch denim blog Blue Roots Official (@bluerootsofficial). And now I find myself amongst giants on ClobberCalm. All these things wouldn’t have happened without Instagram.

2. Why Denim, Boots, Workwear, Ruggedness?

I think I’ve always been trying to fit a certain style and not being comfortable with it most of the time. Changing it from time to time without success. I think it’s important that you can identify yourself with the way you dress. Ever since I got introduced with raw denim I feel I have found the style that fits me best. And like most of us ‘Denim Heads’ I have a big appreciation for garments that are produced with high standards of quality, durability and sustainability.

I didn’t understand what I had in my hands the first time some guy at the local jeans shop gave me a dry denim and I probably ‘messed’ my first raws up. But now I can easily drool over a fresh pair of raws for hours on end. This whole lifestyle that comes with denim gave me a pretty good sense of how I want to dress. So now I own a pair of Red Wings, denim shirts, denim jacket, flannels, a badass leather jacket, Chucks and a stack of raw denims. And it’s all I need.

3. What are your thoughts on the rise in popularity of “Instafashion” and the community it is creating?

There’s a lot of fashion on Instagram, but also a lot of style. And I like to pay more attention to style rather than fashion. It’s more likely to stick. But I think the way it’s creating communities is a cool thing. On Instagram I feel this has a more ‘organic’ nascency, because it’s not being forced into groups like the one Facebook uses. Nevertheless we still manage to find each other and have a good time. In May this year I attended the Amsterdam Denim Days and I met some of the guys I’ve been following on Instagram for the very first time. In person. It was like my timeline coming to life. Crazy fun I can tell you! So yeah, I’ve made some friends through Instagram that I would otherwise have never met.

4. Top 3 brands to shop and why?

Nudie Jeans (https://www.nudiejeans.com/) is nummer ett for me. My first serious break-in attempt was a Nudie and it’s now my favourite pair. I love that they start out raw, but nothing beats a well worn-in jeans. Nudie Jeans have some of the best timeless pieces available. I love the whole philosophy behind the brand, especially their sustainable approach of producing denim, and their sense of humor. I was invited to a party at the Nudie Jeans showroom in Amsterdam while the whole team from Sweden was there. We spent a great part of the evening playing table tennis.

Ever since my appreciation for denim started I’ve been a big fan of Benzak Denim Developers (http://www.benzakdenimdevelopers.com/). Founder and designer Lennaert Nijgh has a great eye for detail. He even created one for his own jeans, the hidden sixth pocket. Lennaert exclusively works with high quality materials and the best artisans in the game. He started with a line of Japan made denims, but recently launched a fully European made collection with fabrics from Candiani Denim. And I love the fact that the brand is Dutch.

I really like brands that replicate vintage pieces and innovate them to fit today’s requirements. Adding their own signature and obviously working with quality materials. In my opinion P&Co (https://pand.co/) is such a brand. They are relatively new to the denim game, but offer some great denim items. For instance, their KS2 Newhall has the perfect slim fit. They worked really hard to get the fit like it is. They also pay close attention to details which makes all their products stand out. One of the best lifestyle brands out there if you ask me.

5. Where’s your favourite place to shop these brands?

I do most of my shopping online. Not only because it’s easier, but P&Co for instance only offers online shopping at this time. BDD has a few resellers, but not in the area where I live. And Nudie Jeans, well, you can find them at quite a few stores but they primarily offer pre-washed denims. Except for the stores that sell premium denim. But again, they’re not set-up in my hood. Currently, there’s no Nudie Jeans store in The Netherlands. Fingers crossed there will be one in the near future.

6. When did you decide to voice and share your love for your clobber on social media?

About three years ago (2013) I started a blog on Tumblr (http://denimxcoffee.com/) where I share all sorts of denim and coffee related content. This really fuelled my inspiration and it got me hooked to the two things I really love (besides my lovely wife and little boy obviously). This is when I started to learn more about raw denim. Only a year ago I started using my existing Instagram account to post my own pictures. And yes, there’s some coffee on it but mainly denim.

7. What’s the secret behind your great images; Who takes them? When are they taken? How do you capture the magic your followers enjoy so much?

I really do try to make a great image that people will enjoy. Sometimes that works out better than other times. I take most of the pictures myself. I use the camera’s self timer for shots with me in it. That means I push the button and have to hurry myself to the right spot within three seconds. If people could only see.

Sometimes an idea shapes in my head that I follow through. At this point I can almost kind of predict which post will be a winner. Almost. My biggest secret is VSCO. Not really a secret at all. Oh, and I alway shoot in daylight in the best light I can find.

8. What feeds do you like to follow and check in on? Who should we check out?

There’s a whole bunch of feeds I like to follow, but the ones that deserves to be checked out are:

@ryancascarano – I’m jealous of Ryan’s amazing outdoor adventures and the way he document those with his camera. Besides that he’s got an amazing taste in denim, shirts and leather boots and accessories.

@nifty_wowo – You might know him from Vancouver based men’s clothing and accessories store @nifty_do. You don’t have to wonder why he looks on point every single time. And I imagine he’s a funny guy.

@andreasbergstrom83 – Andreas lives in beautiful Sweden and – like me – is a huge Nudie fan. He eats raw denim for breakfast, so I imagine. He’s got a lovely family that are all wearing proper denims. What’s not to check out?

@matt.nudie – Nudie Jeans Account Executive in LA. I enjoy his feed and his tattoo collection. And did I mention he works at Nudie Jeans? His personal style is second to none and he’s got some great taste in interior design.

@vincent.owl – Vincent is Store Manager at Maison Kitsuné in Paris. I love his sense of style. His wardrobe must be impressive. Furthermore it’s denim, coffee, boots, tats, cafe racers and guitars. Need I say more?

9. What tips would you give new starters on Instagram to help them get there feed off the ground and successful?

Pay attention to the details, like angle, lighting and your surroundings. Try to be consistent throughout your feed. Shoot the pictures you would like to see on Instagram yourself. Everyone copies everyone, just try to add something to it. Don’t just copy, it’s less fun. Try to write something interesting or funny and interact with others. Make yourself part of the community. You’ll be alright.

10. And Lucky Last, You’re going to be stranded on a desert island and you can take 1 outfit (4 items) Only with you.

What would they be? And Why?

1. Starting with my 1930’s replica baseball cap from Benzak Denim Developers. I imagine being stuck on a tropical island, so a cap will keep my head cool.

2. My indigo dyed shirt from Selected Homme. Love the texture of the fabric and it’s a nice and lightweight shirt.

3. My trusted worn-in Steady Eddies from Nudie Jeans. No matter what. I could make shorts out of them. But won’t.

4. I’ve got these awesome 1970’s Chuck Taylor’s Lo in natural. They are so good and need to be with me on that island.

Jason, bob on my friend, top notch interview and I know for sure I will be coming back to this more than once in the not too distance future. I know it’s been a while since we originally penned this feature so I would like to thank you for your patience brother.
The @bluerootsofficial stuff is on point, we need to hook up more…teamwork makes the dream work and all that. We should speak again soon as I’ve been working on a little project that I think we could certainly hook up on, reach out if you’re interested buddy.

So what’s next? Well, shit loads tbh! This Saturday we have the first review of #threadsandfades2017; 5 guys in 4 countries all wearing some @shockoe_atelier jeans for 1 whole year (2017) as much as physically possible. It’s the end of January so it’s time to see how the boys are doing. We will be hearing from @rickisamhall@sel.vage@drmmathias@johanmalik80@bothrops1 – about what’s been happening in their neck of the woods. I imagine this months’ to be a tame affair as 30 days isn’t quite long enough to implement any sort of serious fades on any Raws. Never the less this is a journey from start to finish about 5 blue bloods and their strides so this Saturday at 10am we will release the first instalment of the project right here on clobbercalm.com and if you don’t already shoot across to @threads.and.fades.2017 and hit FOLLOW in order to catch up on the project so far.

I also need to get my arse in gear and get to penning the first instalment of ‘Denim4Days’. A once-a-month feature where guest writers come and say their piece on, well, anything they want that’s denim related. I’ve bagged Jan and June for myself so I need to get the ball rolling but rest assured there will be some interesting denim injections from people involved in the denim community worldwide! Yup, we’re just gunna keep going here @clobbercalm till we physically can’t go anymore…

Then we have Monday (ah Monday with it’s familiar less stressful ground) when we interview a ‘Brand Behind The Menswear’…with a difference this time! On Monday @conedenim, yup, the legendary denim mill and supplier to everybody from @levis.vintage.clothing to @tellason to @aegishandcraft has taken the time to jump on the 10@10 bar stool and spill the beans on their heritage-steeped company. It’s the real shitting deal people and I’m really quite smug about it (in a completely humble way) that we get to publish a feature from these guys!

Check out the @clobbercalm collaborations HERE people, we have teamed up with some cracking handmade dudes and dudettes to produce some tip-top stellar products and I can’t give a big shout out for these guys enough so bob on guys and take a look 😀

Have a great weekend folks and please, continue to stay close!

Ben @clobbercalm.
