Evening blue bloods.
Shit lads it’s Thursday again. Where does the time go?
I never put time aside to just reflect on things/absorb thoughts and enjoy the current moment for what it actually is and as a result I’m sat here @clobbercalm HQ (the “infamous” island in my kitchen) wondering what the fu*k I’ve been upto for the past week! Or maybe it’s just #dadlife…who knows eh?! So long as I’m not alone, right?
Last week I introduced you all to the double-bubble Thursdays but if you have no idea what I’m taking about skip back a week to take a quick look. Long story short, each Thursday we will now release features on not one blue blood but two of them!
Now, we still release the features separately in their own entity so if, below, you can only see one, don’t worry. Just click back to the home page and the other will be sat right next to it 😉 Trust us.
MEET THE MAN BEHIND THE MENSWEAR
NAME: Jonathan Grinberg aka @yonagrinberg
LOCATION: Tel-aviv, Israel
OCCUPATION: Owner of three cafes named ‘The Streets’, partner in a bar named ‘Denim’
1. So Why Instagram?
I’m not on Facebook, somehow I survived all these years without caving. Instagram began as a place for inspiration. Finding new dishes and serving ideas for the cafes I own. Just to stay in touch with what is going on in the world. The effect on me was so profound, getting inspired by just a visual. Then I understood that instead of just posting your day-to-day photos you can create your own thing. Make it special. Instagram had a huge part in me acquiring my style and fashion preferences.
2. Why Denim, Boots, Workwear, Ruggedness?
All my life I had a fashion bug. Maybe because I was born in London and my grandparents owned a boutique which I never visited. I remember myself wearing a Fred Perry polo shirt, 501’s and Doc Martens. My Israeli friends thought I was crazy. This was thirty years back. Then during my years in university I would buy more expensive yet more durable fashion items. Always with a denim connection. But I was jumping from style-to-style not committing to anything. A store in Israel started importing Nudie Jeans. He told me they were raw and I shouldn’t wash them to make them my own. BANG. It took me back to all those Levi’s ads when I was kid. That was the beginning of finding and committing to a style. It’s as though I was waiting for it to click back to my childhood. Bare in mind, Tel-aviv does not have the easiest climate for this fashion. Even though, the idea of buying less and wearing it more. I love it.
3. What are your thoughts on the rise in popularity of “Instafashion” and the community it is creating?
Well, not many people in Israel are part of this style so for me its amazing to be known and get to know so many people internationally. Lets face it, you get to an age you want less friends. But if there is a common, unique interest – it all happens. I literally don’t have anyone to talk to about this stuff let alone appreciate it. For me because it’s a tight unique community, I love it.
4. Top 3 brands to shop and why?
Benzak Denim Developers – I owe a lot to Dutch makers. My first pair of selvedge denim were Denham’s. My most faded denim are custom made Tulps. Benzak’s clothing is cool but very loyal to heritage. I dig that. And I love the phrase “modern day cowboy”. He’s kind of a one man brand. I admire that.
Pigeon Tree Crafting – I think a large part of added spice are our accessories. Wallet, belt, bag – they complete our look. When I first saw Issac’s quick release indigo belt, that was it. Again a one man brand and he does everything with his hands. Kind of envy that.
5. Where’s your favourite place to shop these brands?
Sadly, and luckily, nearly none of the unique brands I love are available in Israel. So my shopping is online.
6. When did you decide to voice and share your love for your threads on social media?
October 30th 2016. Well that was the first post of devoting my Instagram to this thing of ours. I had a regular, all kinds of posts, account and started to see people that theirs was full on. At first I thought they were crazy. But I kept waiting for them to post and noticed the personal creativity aspect. It took me a while and then I just made a decision. Go for it no matter what anyone thinks because you like it. I admit no one was really surprised.
7. What’s the secret behind your great images; Who takes them? When are they taken? How do you capture the magic your followers enjoy so much?
All my images are taken by a good friend and amazing photographer, named Ran. He works in my café every day and when I showed him some stuff he got inspired and said, “lets go for it”. At the beginning I wanted it to be a very urban, no real place thing like back yards in the middle of the city and stuff. Now, because I feel good with it, I thought maybe I’ll continue with showing Tel-aviv. It’s an amazing city. Scouting for cool locations will familiarise me with all its corners. Maybe attract a bunch of denim heads to come for a vacation and I’ll have some one to talk to ha ha. Actually @bvo_66 was here and I missed him in my café which was bad luck.
8. What feeds do you like to follow and check in on? Who should we check out?
Well, Bert @bvo_66 was a huge inspiration for me because he does so much with so little. I love the fact that he wears the same denim year round. Sometimes I feel people (including me) are buying too much, isn’t the point to wear the hell out of our shit? Any way this dude @puggy_k from Seoul is not our thing for say but is amazing.
@whoisjohnnn_dough, @vonabiszett, @wildfrontiergoods, of course @johanmalik80 who is just a nice guy (and legend), @jasonvanpul, @sennah0j (one of the first guys I related to), @vorstenbos (the style on that guy?!), @shadows_of_indigo (another awesome dude) and it never ends…but last, who is in his own league entirely @corymahlke! Wow, the things he does.
9. What tips would you give new starters on Instagram to help them get there feed off the ground and successful?
Just do your thing and your style and unique language will appear. I’m still not sure about mine but some days it feels really good. Stick to it. Like the denim we wear, suddenly those fades start appearing.
10. And Lucky Last, You’re going to be stranded on a desert island, you can take 1 outfit (4 items) and 1 drink ONLY with you.
What would they be? Who made them? Why are you taking them?
My @redwingshoes Iron Rangers – we’ve been through so much together.
My @benzakdenimdevelopers black denim – because I love blue so much, I just don’t wear them enough and I’d love to fade a black pair.
@risingsunjeans duck ranch jacket – I love that jacket. Damn, I love it so much.
Fourth would be a surfboard. Another crazy passion of mine. I feel that the island will have some surf.
The drink would be good old Lagavulin 16. Love that smoky awesome stuff!!!
Ok, so now you’re one down on tonight’s brothers but make sure you check out our other dude for the evening right HERE. Seriously, I could have gone to town on the photos these guys post, some seriously solid feeds being discussed this evening people…SOLID!
