Onto tonight, we have Brian aka @boothunter in the 10@10 hot-seat. Brian has a blog HERE that documents his love for all things BOOTS so what better way to introduce this blog than for Brian to tell you a bit about himself/his history…

Brian: Agency founder and principal, focused on consumer and products marketplace research development including segmentation demography, psyche, behavior, brand and creative campaign development. Experienced at merchandising and retailing strategy with experience in traditional and social media direction. Co-Founder of fashion tech company StyleSeek, now Raise, and founder of fashion industry start-up space and concept store PreFAB Space. Now focused on education and start-up in a blended university and co-working space environment at Niels Brock CIBU. I started BootHunter in part to build a future customer base for my next venture, a menswear brand named Merchants Harbor.

1. So Why Instagram?

I was introduced to Instagram by a friend in late 2010, he recommended it as I loved taking photos and including context and story along with them. I was an early and among the minority of men using Pinterest and my buddy thought Instagram would be a great sharing format for my hobbies that included apparel, shoes, boots, cars, food, and travel among other things. I was immediately hooked, now, 3 or 4 accounts later, I have settled into BootHunter, though I also have my own @prefabsandiego, and administer my university’s @cibusandiego accounts as well. Combined, I have about 14,000 followers.

2. Why Denim, Boots, Workwear, Ruggedness?

I’ve always been an avid hiker and camper and as such appreciated great boots and denim. I think my gravitation towards more rugged, blue collar-inspired daily wear was inspired by the great recession, somehow as I experienced the loss of my agency, and struggle to develop a new career, work wear just made more sense. I guess I felt more capable of working my way back in the iconic clothes of American workers of the past.


3. What are your thoughts on the rise in popularity of “Instafashion” and the community it is creating?

I think it is a natural progression of individualism and our desire and ability to connect with people who share our taste and personal style. Instagram is so far the most ideal of the lifestyle sharing platforms as it is ultimately mobile, visual, and collaborative.

4. Top 3 brands to shop and why?

Red Wing – Iconic brand, handcrafted, long lasting, American made, brand retailer driven.

Dixon Rand – Design, style, construction, attention to detail, dedication to quality, standard bearer of Americana.

Mifland Brand – American made, attention to detail, quality of leather, design, color play.


5. Where’s your favourite place to shop these brands?

While there are retailers such as The Stronghold Denim, Stag Provisions, Will Leather Goods, Taylor Stitch and Snake Oil Provisions. I love to discover and shop online.


6. When did you decide to voice and share your love for your threads on social media?

I started voicing my opinion about apparel on Instagram back in late 2010. Shortly thereafter I added Pinterest and have developed a decent following of more than 14,000.

7. What’s the secret behind your great images; Who takes them? When are they taken? How do you capture the magic your followers enjoy so much?

I take around 80% of the photos on BootHunter. The other 20% come from more than a dozen contributors across the globe sharing a similar passion for boots and the lifestyle associated with them. My photos are taken across in my daily life and travels, I always include some relative context in my images, I think the context gives the photos and products shown more meaning and added character. I think my followers enjoy the fact that my boots and the places that they take me are the central feature on my Instagram.


8. What feeds do you like to follow and check in on? Who should we check out?

From a brand stand point, of course there are a multitude that I follow, but in terms of individuals who I find inspiring, definitely my top ones include @corymahlke, @jimmy.thejackal, @dixonrand, @drmmathias, @clobbercalm, @whoisjohnnn_dough, @jmietzel, and @johanmalik80.

9. What tips would you give new starters on Instagram to help them get there feed off the ground and successful?

Focus on what you know and love, be authentic, be gracious, engage with others, be selective on who and how many you follow, avoid tactics like asking people to follow you, like and respond to those who take the time and attention to make valid comments.


10. And Lucky Last, You’re going to be stranded on a desert island, you can take 1 outfit (4 items) and 1 drink ONLY with you. 

What would they be? Who made them? Why are you taking them?

My Filson Henley Tee-Shirt, K-WAY Rain Jacket, Red Wing Chukka Boots, Filson Field Pants – Each of these brands and products is what I would consider to be ultimately functional, comfortable, and made to last. My beverage of choice would definitely be espresso!
