@Robin.meijerink answers the 10@10

Well this evening’s a little different.

As always we are spitting a 10@10 over in your direction but by way of approaching the project a little differently. Both myself a @robin.Meijerink the man behind @robindenim have teamed up to give a shout out to each other this evening and following that we have a pure #badass giveaway to follow!

Robin and I have cut our teeth together in the denim world and stood side by side whilst our accounts gained momentum. What’s more is we have managed to achieve the dream by both ending up being able to commit ourselves full time to our subsequent pseudonym @robindenim & @clobbercalm with myself taking on the retail route and Robin charging forward with his popular online denim magazine!

We had loads of fun when we met recently in Amsterdam and to add to that our good buddies @bvo_66 and @fadedblueeyes even manged to join us for a pint which made the occasion twice as special. 1 English Dude – 1 American and 2 dutch geezers all brought together in one place to enjoy a pint and its all because of..?

Yup, denim!

This evening we will focus our attention on Robin’s personal profile @Robin.meijerink so we can learn about what makes a bloke who (like me) has not missed 1 day of posting some form of denim related pic in over 2 years!

So, without further ado rockers it’s time to sit back, relax, crack open a bev and
listen to the thoughts of Robin as @robin.meijerink of @robindenim answers the clobbercalm 10@10.

NAME: Robin Meijerink aka @ROBINDENIM
AGE: 28
LOCATION: The Netherlands
OCCUPATION: Founder, Robin Denim

1. So Why Instagram?

I started on Instagram early 2015 to get inspired by fellow denim heads. Since only a few of my friends were wearing raw denim, I needed to broaden my range. It took me just a few weeks to get hooked by all those crazy accounts. I wanted to have a place where only great denim pictures would be featured, and so I decided to start another account, now known as Robin Denim to do that. From that moment onwards I ran these two accounts side by side. Robin Denim to feature the best faded jeans on Earth and my personal account to display my own collection and the things I like.

Being on Instagram resulted in lots of new friends, cool denim meetings and adventures I wouldn’t have had if I weren’t on Instagram.

2. Why Denim, Boots, Workwear, Ruggedness?

I got into raw denim about five years ago. Two friends bought their first project at Tenue de Nimes and convinced me to buy a pair myself. I went to Tenue de Nimes and got myself a pair of Rogue Territory SK. Since I bought it right before the summer, it was hard to start wearing it every day, but as soon as the temperature went down I wore it every day for 1.5 years. When the first fades came in I was completely hooked. Ever since that moment I’ve loved the fading process of raw denim!

3. What are your thoughts on the rise in popularity of “Instafashion” and the community it is creating?

I think it is awesome!

Firstly, because Instagram allows me to relate with like-minded people from all over the world! The culture and the atmosphere are really positive and encouraging! Being part of the strong, open and friendly denim community is such a privilege.

Secondly, since almost all (denim) brands are on Instagram, I can easily follow every brand that interests me. Whether I want to check out the latest collection or some behind the scene shot, I can find it all on Instagram!

4. Top 3 brands to shop and why?

It is really hard to pick just a top 3. I like so many brands for so many reasons… Since it all started with Rogue Territory, this brand will always be kind of special to me.

According to my therapist, their 14.5 oz. SK model is the reason I am addicted to raw denim in the first place..

Another brand that I can’t get enough of is Livid. They manage to come up with the most beautiful Japanese fabrics every year. From the moment I bought my first Livid shirt, I closely followed them!

Okay, now the top 3, haha..

Momotaro Jeans – From the very first moment I started to develop an interest in raw denim, Momotaro became one of my favourite brands. The cool backstory, displayed in so many details, speaks to my imagination! Another cool thing about Momotaro, is that their fabrics are made by the same company. Everything about Momotaro is designed, woven, cut and stitched by the same Japanese company!

Oni Denim – Currently I am wearing the ONI-626-LT17 and this pair of jeans is amazing to say the least. The 17 oz. unsanforized low tension fabric felt like sandpaper at first, but after a couple of weeks it became very comfortable. The slubby fabric fades very nicely and quickly, after just hundred days the fades are already so beautiful. I have seen so many jeans coming by in the last few years, but the way the Oni fabric fades is incredible.

Benzak Denim Developers – What I really love about Benzak is their vision on raw denim. They manage to find the perfect combination between the heritage of Japanese denim and the market these days. Especially their 16 oz. heavy slub denim is worth considering for your next project!

5. Where’s your favourite place to shop these brands?

My favourite stores in Europe are Tenue de Nimes and DC4. Tenue the Nimes reflects my personal style, awesome denim brands like Benzak and Momotaro combined with high end fashion brands such as Acne.

When I visit Berlin I make sure to stop by at DC4. Literally everything inside the shop is Japanese! Daniel, the owner, is a well-experienced and very friendly denim head who can tell you everything about every Japanese brand. Some brands, like Oni & Iron Heart, are pretty hard to find in Europe, but DC4 has them all on stock! If you can’t make it to Berlin, please have a look on their website

My favourite online store is Cultizm. The variety of brands is insane; I can find a whole outfit in just a few minutes and since I am pretty demanding, this is truly special!

6. When did you decide to voice and share your love for your threads on social media?

When I started on Instagram I just posted lots of crappy pictures from my daily life
(food, places I visited and things like that). It took me some months to get the brilliant idea to combine my greatest interests, denim, fashion & travelling with Instagram. When I noticed that people likes what I was doing, I decided to go on!

7. What’s the secret behind your great images; Who takes them? When are they taken? How do you capture the magic your followers enjoy so much?

The secret behind the great images on Robin Denim are all the enthusiastic denim heads on Instagram. Everyday, I receive dozens of e-mails, messages and tags with beautifully worn in jeans. For me, it is just selecting the best pictures! I think this is a great moment to thank all denim heads for their photos & compliments!

For my personal account it is different. I take most of the pictures myself. When I met Victor a.k.a. @selvedge1 at the denim days this year he showed me his camera and tripod. And since I like his pictures a lot I bought, with some help of the great photographer @hansjellema, a tripod myself. Since then I take most of my pictures with the help of the self-timer on my camera! But, the best pictures are all taken by my girlfriend, haha!

8. What feeds do you like to follow and check in on? Who should we check out?

There are so many awesome accounts on Instagram which I like to check out. That is the reason why I spend several hours on Instagram every day. I will mention just a few accounts that are an inspiration for both of my Instagram accounts; @hansjellema, @bvo_66, @johanmalik80, @sel.vage & @raw.denim. But, like I said before, there are so many cool accounts to check out.

9. What tips would you give new starters on Instagram to help them get there feed off the ground and successful?

The two most important things to be successful on Instagram are being yourself & creativity. Of course, a wide selection of nicely worn in denim and an inexhaustible Redwings collection will help, but in my opinion those two are the key to success.

10. And Lucky Last, You’re going to be stranded on a desert island, you can take 1 outfit (4 items) and 1 drink ONLY with you.
What would they be? Who made them? Why are you taking them?

ONI-626-LT17 – Since I’ve only been wearing my Oni for the past 115 days now, I definitely would have to take it with me! It will be sweaty for sure, but the weather will accelerate the fading process! Hopefully I will be stuck on the island for at least 250 days, so I can give the Oni a sea wash on its first anniversary.

Benzak Embroidery Tee – Of course I need to take a T-shirt with me.. So why not take my favourite!

Momotaro Type II Denim jacket – I heard that this particular desert Island has very cold nights.. So I’ll take my favourite Momotaro denim jacket it with me to keep me warm!

Converse Chuck Taylors 70’s – During the summer I can’t live without a pair of low top 70’s!

For the drink, I would definitely take a cold Coke with me!

Woah……..Awesome Robin although I’m pretty sure we all knew it would be bro!

No long goodbyes to finish this feature as me and Robin will be hooking up regular from now on so, ’til the next time! Chow!

Oh wait…..the next is tomorrow when we hook up for a joint giveaway with our good friends over at @nbh_arnhem who have VERY GENEROUSLY offered a FULL outfit for one of you lucky brothers (or sisters) to win!!!!!!

Stay very close to all 3 of our profiles over the weekend guys as this is little treat that’s not to be missed 😉

And oh, have I mentioned the Bullet Club yet? Not sure I have. Well I don’t want to say too much on here other than if you want in, you need to drop me a comment below with your email or you can come direct to me on ben@clobbercalm.com. It’s worth the effort, promise!

Stay close, much love.

Ben @clobbercalm.
