@wings_and_denim answers the 10@10

Good evening folks

Hope you are all doing fantastic, people. The weekend is around the corner and surely that brings, with it, all ends of possibilities?! No? Well, at least it’s not going to snow…hopefully! Actually, I suppose to some of you reading this, snow may be on the cards so, hope those of you have sledges 👊

Anyway, I digress! Right, so, a couple of days ago Ben put a shout-out to all the denim-heads out there to send over their answers to the 10@10. You replied in droves BUT one person was quicker off the draw than the others, which means that he is our guy for tonight. Fair, right?

The bro in question is Martin aka @wings_and_denim and with a feed that boasts both of those things the stars seem to have aligned aha! Martin is quite new to the IG game, December 2017 to be precise, but he’s already racking up a helluva presence. Wanna see if his is a helluva feature? Yeah!

Well, sit back, relax, crack open a cold one and enjoy the thoughts of Martin as @wings_and_denim answers the clobbercalm 10@10.

1. So Why Instagram?

Instagram is a such a great place to share your passion and interests with like minded people; it allows people to inspire each other and in an age of selfies and ego-flaunting it’s so nice to be a part of this denim community where the ethos is very much style over fashion.

2. Why Denim, Boots, Workwear, Ruggedness?

I’ve always liked wearing jeans with a pair of boots, for me it’s a timeless look. This is a style that I’ve always been drawn to and it’s always suited me; I’ve never been one to wear trainers as I’ve always felt smarter and more mature wearing jeans and boots/shoes – maybe I’m getting old? Plus, as we all know descent jeans and boots last! Plus a good flannel shirt for durability and an effortless style.

3. What are your thoughts on the rise in popularity of “Instafashion” and the community it is creating?

Instafashion is a good thing be it a celebrity promoting and inspiring or a fashion blogger creating a blog for the high street shopper; either way it gives people a chance to explore and find their own voice in style. I think these new communities are a good thing and it’s creating a new movement which many people can be part of, and again, communicate with people who have similar interests.

4. Top 3 brands to shop and why?

Lee 101 jeans: because they fit me really well, being a man of 6’ 2” it can be hard to find a really good fitting pair of jeans. The quality is perfect and the craftsmanship is spot on. The 101 Riders work every time for me, I have six pairs all in various oz and I love them all…plus the fades are great!

Redwing, of course! They’re bloody hard to break in but once you’re past that initial period they really do start to come into their own. I have some 8138 Mocs, 8119 Rangers, and some 875s which are coming in the post! Great shoes, great quality, and a timeless, iconic style.

Happy socks – you can’t beat a good pair of socks! An essential part of the kit, I’d say. I find happy socks coupled with the Red Wing insoles make for a perfect duo; the socks allow your feet to breathe in the boot and the insoles help support your feet on those long country walks.

5. Where’s your favourite place to shop these brands?

I love going to Son of a Stag in Shoreditch, London. The clothes and the brands are fantastic and there’s nowhere like it in my hometown in Essex! I either have to order online or plan a trip up if there’s something i’m after, most of the time I like to try things on first if possible.

6. When did you decide to voice and share your love for your threads on social media?

I’ve been on Instagram since it pretty much started – way before selfies and food pics! I used it as a personal diary of my day to day journey. As the years went by I started to really get into clothes, fashion, and style and started to publish pics on my feed, I’ve dabbled with friends on fashion blogs and what not but it never really took off as I didn’t know what I was aiming for. I started to get a bit more direction when I began to buy more denim, flannel, boots, Sherpas etc and I thought ‘maybe this is my thing?’ So I started @wings_and_denim and have received some encouraging feedback which is great.

7. What’s the secret behind your great images; Who takes them? When are they taken? How do you capture the magic your followers enjoy so much?

I take all my own pics on my iPhone 7…part of me feels I should be using a proper camera but there are some really good editing apps and the editing tools within Instagram work wonders. For me a great pic is not just the subject but that moment in time; be it a photo of your morning coffee or a photo of your new jeans, it’s about capturing the mood and the moment and hope that it has an impact on the people viewing it. You do have to be quite creative with it as most people have some kind of camera phone these days so it’s very easy to take a quick, basic snap so thinking about the composition and subject are quite important.

8. What feeds do you like to follow and check in on? Who should we check out?

I really enjoy the feeds of: @lordoftheredwings – Mike is great and has a good eye for detail and style, @calgeary is another guy who is creative with his thread pics, @sel.vage has got it nailed! @myself_and_denim has some great Lee selvedge too!

9. What tips would you give new starters on Instagram to help them get there feed off the ground and successful?

To get started on Instagram I think you have to know that it won’t happen quickly! Gaining a following takes time, trial and error, as well as taking great pics. There’s a big difference between taking a crotch selfie and a well thought through full-body shot to show off your new jeans and boots; you gotta think outside the box – see what other feeds are doing to inspire and see what you can do with yours!

10. And Lucky Last, You’re going to be stranded on a desert island, you can take 1 outfit (4 items) and 1 drink ONLY with you.

What would they be? Who made them? Why are you taking them?

I’d take a pair of Happy Socks and a descent pair of boxer shorts – do these count? My Lee 101 13oz jeans, and a good flannel shirt, Sherpa and Mocs! I think this covers it…this outfit has options to be adapted for most kinds of weather…either way I’ll look cool as fuck!

You’re a star Martin! Not just quick off the draw but cracking answers, man. Hope the feed carries on taking off and thanks, again, for the swift response plus the enthusiasm to be featured. Without guys like you showing an interest we’d not be where we’re at right now so cheers 🍻

All the rest of you, keep those peepers peeled for further updates on the clobber-casts, the new website and the plethora of blogs that are coming your way!

Peace ✌️
